Chartered Fellow Programs & Examination

Chartered Fellow Exams

The Chartered Fellow examinations, for entry to the SIA's peak membership grade are conducted by the College. Members with tertiary safety qualifications can seek examination by the College for award of Chartered Fellow.

As the SIA's peak membership grade, Chartered Fellow examinations are generally equivalent to post graduate "Distinction" level academic standards of scholarship. In addition, candidates are assessed for their knowledge and contribution to the profession.

The examination includes four distinct assessment activities:

An original, fully referenced paper, of a style acceptable for an international peer reviewed journal

  • Personal reflective journal over a period of 3 months
  • Interview of two referees who are familiar with the work of the candidate
  • Telephone oral examination covering contemporary safety science doctrine and issues.

Chartered Fellows are issued a personal CFSIA seal for affixing to their documents and reports.

Members and fellows wishing to register for the Chartered Fellow examinations should contact the SIA at natadmin@sia.org.au

Advancing SIA Membership

The College of Fellows provides a tangible reason for SIA members to upgrade their membership as soon as they reach the Fellowship threshold (CPMSIA plus at least ten years experience with 50 CPD points accumulated over the ten (or more) years).

The College will provide a clear path forward for individuals wishing to influence the shape of future regulatory arrangements and programs across the full spectrum of safety applications and disciplines.

If members are CPMSIA (or a person meets the criteria for CPMSIA), and have at least ten years safety experience, they are almost certain to meet the minimum requirements for fellowship. The College will actively encourage them to compile a brief portfolio of evidence of their professional activities to date, to demonstrate the equivalent of 50 CPD points, and submit an SIA membership upgrade/application.
