Re: Calling all Plant & Machinery OHS Professionals

Date posted: 13/09/2010 11:57 - Stewart Riddel

I would like to be involved in this group. At the University here in Ballarat, we have many items of plant and machinery, especially in the TAFE sections. There is alot to learn from folk out there and I would like to be in a position to learn as much as possible from those in the know!

Thanks

Stewart

I have noticed that there hasn't been much response to this SIG in the area of machine guarding. To my mind there seem to be two levels when discussing machine safety. There are engineers who are experts in the technical detail of systems and struggle to communicate in simple terms machine safety concepts and there are many OHS people who while understanding generic concepts of safety have no real idea about the AS4024 standard or basic understanding of such things as Categories of guarding.

At a conference recently that focused on the issue of machine guarding it was obvious that most line managers and line engineers want ideas and risk assessment tools and training. In my experience , coming out of a machine related fatality, I would like to see OHS professionals get a better insight into the maintenance engineer's world and vice versa. There are cultural differences between the two out there in "real plant " world and I suspect they avoid each other when it comes to guarding safety, much to the frustration of the Line Managers who are actually responsible for people.

I would be interested to hear from OHS people who are involved in machinery assessments. By that I mean machines that can entangle and harm and what  they do when it comes to their machinery. Particularly FMCG organisations where operators are contsntly interacting with equipment.

Good morning Kurt, I have just had a change of career two weeks back and am now working with a Division of Cleary Bros Pty. Ltd as their Plant Hire/Earth Moving division WHS&Q co-ordinator, I would be most interested in joining this forum especially on the the topic of SWMS for construction type machinery.
