From the desk of the CEO

Thursday 20 September, 2012

The Safety Conference Sydney 2012 is fast approaching. With a theme of ‘As the dust settles’, the conference is designed to address a range of issues from how the OHS landscape has changed with the adoption of Work Health and Safety laws across multiple jurisdictions, through to managing safety in some of the most challenging scenarios imaginable.

For example, Peter Baines, who spent 22 years with the NSW Police leading teams in response to acts of terrorism and natural disasters, will discuss safety management and the role of safety leadership in emergencies and disasters. Having worked in such situations in Bali after the 2002 bombings, Thailand following the Boxing Day tsunami, Saudi Arabia following the floods in Jeddah and Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 2011, he is ideally placed to share unique insights into safety leadership in the most extreme circumstances.

Also speaking at the conference is Michael Costello, principal policy officer for WorkCover NSW. As NSW is one of the jurisdictions that adopted the model Work Health and Safety laws, Michael will examine the evolution of safety regulation, the drivers behind change to OHS frameworks and discuss how these have impacted OHS professionals on a day-to-day basis.

There are many other great speakers lined up to present at the conference, from Norton Rose’s Michael Tooma and M+K Lawyers’ Andrew Douglas, through to WorkCover NSW’s Jodie Deakes and SummitCare’s Judith Leacock. Both myself and a number of SIA Board members will be in attendance, and I would welcome the opportunity to meet you at the Cocktail Networking Function.
