As we rapidly approach the festive season and another new year, it’s time to
reflect on achievements within the Institute in 2011 and to look forward to the
opportunities in front of us in 2012. Please click on the following link for a

Board Meeting Outcome Report December 2011
I would like to acknowledge and thank those many members who have volunteered
their time and expertise to support the work of the Institute this year. Here’s
how those volunteers made a difference to the Institute and to us as members:
Participation on a local Board (now Branch Committees) or National Board;
membership of project teams and conference committees; contributing informed
input to our submissions to external parties; organising informed input to
those submissions; representing the Institute on external committees; managing
the member grading programmes; running professional development programmes;
building a core body of knowledge and planning for its integration into
education and practice; assessing applications for Chartered Fellow
status; editing publications, conducting peer review of proposed content
and contributing material to publications.
Thanks also to our CEO Keith Brown, Danielle Laffey - Manager of Operational
Excellence and the staff of the National office for their consistently good
work in supporting members and managing the operations of the Institute.
We have a busy year ahead of us in 2012. Our profession will be practised
amid some of the most significant changes to the OHS operating environment of
the last 30 years: the emergence of harmonised OHS legislation – albeit not in
every jurisdiction just yet – and the development of a core body of knowledge
for generalist OHS practitioners which will underpin the future shape of
tertiary OHS education and member certification. As our profession evolves in
this dynamic environment the Institute will continue to lead change and
represent the interests of its members and the profession.
On behalf of the Board of Directors I wish each of you a safe and happy holiday
season and we look forward to a productive year together in 2012 as members of
the Safety Institute of Australia Ltd.
Kind regards,
Sue Pilkington, FSIA
Chair, Board of Directors,
