Concerns raised over new chemical classification regime

There are significant areas of concern with how Australia will adopt the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) for the classification and labeling of chemicals as part of the new Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws, according to an expert in the area.

Action over steel roller door incident

Australian Air Express recently commenced an enforceable undertaking following a workplace incident in 2009 when a Sydney contractor was severely injured after being struck by a steel roller door. In the incident, which occurred on 28 May 2009, the contractor suffered a traumatic brain injury.

WorkSafe issues warning over workers’ compensation fraud

The prosecution of a woman who went back to work after suffering a back injury, but kept claiming workers’ compensation benefits, has led to a WorkSafe Victoria warning to workers about rorting the system.

Call for comment on rail fatigue regulations

The National Transport Commission (NTC) recently released for public comment a draft regulatory impact statement, which outlines options for regulating the hours of work and rest for rail safety workers under the new Rail Safety National Law to commence in 2013.
