SIA advances OHS Body of Knowledge

The Safety Institute of Australia anticipates that drafts of the OHS Body of Knowledge project will be completed in January 2011, when there will be a peer-review process by other specialists in the area and selected OHS professionals.

More than 90 per cent of OHS professionals believe the need to develop a safety culture through a people-based program is of critical to high importance to their organisation as they head into 2011, according to a recent study.

New bike helmet standards slated

New bicycle helmet safety standards which come into force on 13 December are designed to force manufacturers to improve the safety of helmets by using a softer polystyrene in the shell, using straps that will stretch sufficiently in an accident and ensure sun visors do not twist a cyclist’s head excessively should it hit the road.

Prosecution after safety notice lapse

A Victorian sheet metal fabrication and manufacturing company which failed to make safety improvements to protect workers from injury recently pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to comply with improvement notices issued by a WorkSafe Victoria inspector.
