QLD floods jeopardise mine safety

More than 40 mines in Queensland have been shut down due to the recent floods, which have given rise a range of safety and legal issues that will have a significant impact on the operation of resources projects, according to a national law firm.

Fines totaling $260,000 were recently imposed on two gold mining companies in Victoria, after a December 2007 underground explosion led to 10 workers being taken to hospital after miners were exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide.

Liverpool company fined after worker crushed to death

A Liverpool company has been fined $100,000 and ordered to pay WorkCover NSW’s legal costs after a 58-year-old Minto man was crushed to death when a loading ramp collapsed after a hydraulic lifter malfunctioned at a demolition site in Fairfield in January 2008.
