Effective OHS representatives are “very rare” in the mining sector, with most OHS practitioners “well meaning but generally ineffective”, according to a mining union leader.

The Greens have called upon other states to include a union right to prosecute in their adoption of model Work Health and Safety laws, following the inclusion in NSW’s harmonised OHS laws of the right for union secretaries to prosecute breaches of the legislation.

Fines imposed for multiple electric shocks

A Hunter Valley heavy vehicle hire and haulage company has been fined $65,000 and ordered to pay WorkCover NSW’s legal costs after two of its workers received electric shocks while unloading construction material underneath live powerlines near Taree in 2008.
