Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that you gain both formally and informally as you work, beyond any initial training. It's a record of what you experience, learn and then apply.
The SIA takes a strong interest in CPD because it ensures we continue to be competent in our profession. It is an on-going process and continues throughout our careers. Commitment to CPD ensures individuals routinely reflect and review their current knowledge and skill level to guide and focus building their professional standing. For SIA members, CPD is the requirement for maintaining their Certification and/or member grading (CFSIA/FSIA/CPMSIA).
CPD Planning and Reporting Tool Guidelines details the procedures for members conducting CPD planning and reporting through the use of the online CPD planning and reporting tool. The guidelines include an overview of the CPD program, details on who can use the tool, advice on how it is monitored, directions for its use, and general guidance on reflective practice. Members and non-membres can review the Guidelines to get further idea about the purpose of SIA CPD program, what is included in the program and how to use the CPD online planning and reporting tool. One important guide for CPD program is the Global OHS Capability Framework. This document was created by the International Network of Safety and Health Practitioner Organisations (INSHPO) to provide greater clarity around the generalist OHS positions by defining levels of practice, roles, and what capabilities, knowledge and skills they would require to be effective. It is based on an analysis of the practices of various professional associations, certification bodies and credentialing organisations and was subject to critical review, both through INSHPO’s own channels and at international conferences and presentations. The Framework provides generic guidance which may need to be adapted and developed in more detail by each organization to account for variations in regulations, histories and cultures as they pertain to OHS practice.
Another guide for professional certification and also provides important benchmark information for continuing professional development is the OHS Body of Knowledge for Generalist OHS Professionals (OHS BoK). It was developed to define the collective knowledge that should be shared by Australian Generalist OHS Professionals as a basis for understanding the causation and control of work-related fatality, injury, disease and ill-health. This body of knowledge is utilised as a basis for accreditation of education programs giving entry to the profession.
